New Zealand history

Polynesians  started to come around the 1300’s to today. The  1800’s were important because Maori and European migrants had their first major interaction with each other. People change when they come to New Zealand.

Early polynesian navigators.

Kupe  and his wife Kuramartini were the first people to discover New Zealand and they named it Aotearoa, which means land of the long white cloud. They came for more land and to explore so they find more things that they do not have in Polynesia. The Polynesians used the birds , moon , planets , current and the clouds to navigate.

Early European settlement.

In the 1850’s the first british permanent settlers arrived in New Zealand. They came for gold and good farming. It was a 6 week journey that was very hard and they had big families that made it easy to farm.

As the polynesians became maori they had to change to adapt to New Zealand. European language, work, and how they interacted with new people had to change. They had to change the way of farming because of the conditions.

  1. Kia ora Joel, I really enjoyed reading your report about Migration to New Zealand because you included really specific details like the name of Kupe's wife. I wonder if next time you could include a relevant image to hook the reader in? From Judith
